A Day with People Suffering from Mental Disabilities
Identifying the importance of the social responsibilities LEOs of UoM spend a day with people with mental desabilities at the ‘Victoria mental disability center’. The project was an international project which was a joint effort of 9 leo clubs from 5 different countries. In Sri Lanka the project was conducted by leo club of UoM in collaboration with leo club of Carey college on 26th February 2011.
The mental disabilities have no usual life. Even they cannot do their daily activities by their selves. Every time they need a helping hand. Also they have limited opportunities to express their thoughts and emotions to others. It’s very rare to find a person who chats with them. These factors directly pointed us to such a community project.
About 20 leos contributed for this project. The programme was started at about 9.30 am. It included a shramadana campaign to clean the surroundings where they live, which was a needy thing as the whole area was covered with weeds and unwanted plants which was a majour cause for spreading mosquitoes also.Then the LEOs helped them to have their lunch and after that they spent the time talking with them, sharing their stories and laughter. At the end of the event we had a meeting and the chief guest fort the event was District President of district 306C2 Leo Imran Mohamed.Some clothes were also donated to the Victoria home at the end of the event. The day was end up with a great success leaving a smile on their faces.
This was a valuable opportunity not only to improve the fel
lowship among clubs but also to improve the harmony. Also it is a great pleasure for LEOs of UoM to initiate such an international project with a LEO club of district C2. Another successful community project was conducted on last Saturday (11th feb) by LEOs of UoM in collaboration with LEO clubs of Mathugama and Polgasowita. This project was done as a joint project. The main target was to cl
ean the Panadura beach which is one of the most populated areas in these days. There were several discussions going on to select either Mt Lavinia or Panadura. Finally Panadura was selected because it is wider and the beach was not cleaned for a long time.

Finally Panadura was selected because it is wider and the beach was not cleaned for a long time. We, LEOs from all three clubs arrived the place about 9.00 am. About 10 LEOs contributed for this project. Polythene and plastics were targeted mainly. A lot of dirt coul
d be collected and they were put in to the dustbins. The whole beach could be cleaned at about 2.00 pm with no dirt.

Leo Camp 2011
First week of this month was a precious time for the Leos of UoM due to the annual Leo camp organized by Leo District Council 306 A2. A crew of 13 Leos from the UoM was participated for the camp. The camp was held on 4th to 6th of February at the Academy of Adventure Training Location, Kumbalgama, Belihuloya, with duration of three days and two nights where more than 100 Leos of the Leo District 306A2 gathe
red to experience the opportunity of leadership. Furthermore this year’s Leo Camp was an International Youth Camp as well.

take over responsibilities without hesitance’, ‘To thrive trust and self confidence’, ‘To work as a team with team spirit‘ were main objectives of this camp.
About 20 activities were done during the period including jungle expedition, arial rope, rock climbing, confidence jump, rafting, and many more. The camp fire should be specially mentioned here. That was the most attracted event. The fireworks enlightened not only the camp but also the whole belihuloya area. There were 8 dramas performed by 8 groups among the fireworks.
Cabinet Treasurer Lion Arjun abesinghe was the chief guest for the opening ceremony. Deshabandu Lion Duminda Munasinghe, the 2nd vice district governer was the chief guest for the camp fire. First vice governer Lion RAD Padmasiri Ranawaka Aarachchi was the chief guest for the closing ceremony.

A Walk to Remember
The Leo walk 2011 for national Leo day was held today (23rd of jan 2011) from nugegoda junction to pepiliyana. The walk was started at 9.00 am. This time the Leo walk was held in support of taking care of our elders. The w
alk was organized by Leos of DELs, Horana Metro, Maththegoda, Raththanapitiya & UOM. A large number of Leos from these clubs as well as outsiders contributed for this event.

L/C of Dehiwala East and Raththanapitiya. And the drama performed by L/C of University of Moratuwa give us entertainment and a deep meaning to the walk. The walk ended at Pepiliyana Sunethradevi Temple. In the end Leo Club of University of Moratuwa won the award for best participation and L/C s of DEL's and Raththanapitiya were the joint winners of the award for most attractive club.This was a great opportunity to show not only the importance of taking care of elders but also thestrength of Leos to the district.
It was indeed a team effort of Leo District A2 and we UOM leos are proud to be a part in it.
