Leo Club of
University of Moratuwa together with Cleanup Sri Lanka organized Project
Dustoff on the 29th of September 2024. This transformative initiative united a
passionate community driven by the vision of encouraging environmental
sustainability and revitalizing public spaces.
The day
began at 8.00 AM with UoM Leos joining the beach cleanup organized by Cleanup
Sri Lanka at Wellawatte. A diverse group of participants including Leos, Lions
and Cleanup Sri Lanka volunteers worked together to remove waste from the
Wellawatte Beach and the adjacent railway station. Volunteers collected plastic
waste, food wrappers and other debris littering the beach and railway station
premises.
In the
afternoon the team shifted its focus to Moratuwa. Starting at 1.00 PM the
cleanup drive targeted two significant public areas: the Moratuwa Bus Station
and the Moratuwa Railway Station. Leos, Leo prospects and community volunteers
pitched in to collect waste including discarded paper, plastic bottles and
other litter. The collected waste was carefully sorted into recyclable and
non-recyclable categories ensuring proper disposal and environmental
accountability. These efforts left the stations noticeably cleaner and
emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene in busy public spaces.Beyond the
immediate impact of cleaner spaces, the initiative inspired local residents and
commuters to adopt more environmentally thoughtful actions, further improving
the project’s long-term impact.
