A December to remember

LEAP 3.0

Schooling time is the epoch, where children are enthusiastic for leadership experiences. This age can be a wedge stone in one's life that focuses him on a way, in which his future depends on, while that can either be a success or the opposite of it. It is obvious that proper guidance would direct one on the correct path, and influence on his/her future in a fruitful manner.

Leos are the pioneers of taking the social responsibility of guiding the future generation and showing them the way to success. With the vision of a better future, Leo Club of the University of Moratuwa conducted LEAP Phase 3 on 30th of December 2018 with the students of Sankalpa Dhamma School in Moratuwa at the Dhamma school premises. The leadership camp has consisted of leadership development activities, games and fun activities which made each and every student show their skills. The hike organized for the students reinforced the strengths and talents within them with the team spirit.

The end of the camp was more delightful with a fire camp. Everyone had more fun with the activities related to the campfire and there, the students took that opportunity to show up their aesthetic talents with no stage fear. Students were able to have a great experience, which they could never achieve only through books and school curriculum. The Leos themselves were able to witness the outcome before their eyes. The day remarked a successful and a happy ending along with the emotional, heart-warming feedbacks of the students who are ready to shoulder the future of this country as leaders.

නැණ දියවර
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
"නැණ දියවර 2018" is a project launched by Leo Club of University of Moratuwa to enhance the educational background of the students, who are facing their GCE O/L examinations within this year. All these seminars are conducted by our dedicated Leos themselves. After successfully completed three phases of "නැණ දියවර 2018" seminar series, the fourth phase "නැණ දියවර" was held on 10th of November at Hiswella Kanishta Vidyalaya.

Other than the seminar on mathematics, there also were an attitude development program and a motivational program to build the mindset of the students. We conducted another phase of the project series within this month, and it was (the fifth phase) held on 17th & 18th of November at Kolonna National School. Even though the main objective of the project was to teach them mathematics for upcoming O/L examination, our Leos encouraged them to make a better version of themselves. After concluding both seminars, we got very good comments from those children that inspired us more to continue the same deed in future. And this would be the best moment to be thankful for everyone, who helped us so far to make this project a success.

LEAD Workshop
The title LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity, the three attributes that polish the identity of any Leo, to make him/her to a person that can bear the responsibility of the future world one day. Stage Drama ‘Puluwannam Allaganna ’
There’s theatre in life, obviously, and there’s life in theatre
~Charlie Kaufman~
‘Puluwannam Allaganna’ was a drama which was a mere reflection of the society that we are currently experiencing today. This fabulous evening was finally brought in to the screen, as a collective effort of all the Leos and prospects from Leo Club of the University of Moratuwa. The main intention of this annually organized drama was to raise funds for the projects, the club has planned to carry out in future. Further, that was also an endeavour to improve the literal taste and relieve the minds of the viewers from their busy daily schedules.
Old Gymnasium of the university was reserved as the venue of the event, while it was staged in two-time slots during the same day, 1st November. Many of the viewers were the undergraduates from the university, academic and non-academic staff members while Leos, Prospects, Past members and Lions from our club and as well as from other fellow Leo clubs joined with us in that evening.
The drama was a production of Akila Sapumal, who is an emerging young stage drama director in Sri Lanka. The drama crew was a combination of both young and experienced clever actors and actresses including Jagath Chamila, Thilanka Gamage, Imaya Sewwandika, Kithmini Hemachandra, Uditha Liyanage, Dilranga Epa and Susanga Kadawalarachchi.
The plot of the drama was basically on the current situation of the country including how the general public feels about their lives and the true story behind the people and the politicians. This was presented to the audience, with comedy where appropriated and won the attention of the whole audience over the entire drama.

LEAP 2
Leaders are born within ourselves not by hiding among the others shadows, but by coming forward and facing the challenges and learning step by step from those mistakes. But, the quality of coming forward does not come from ourselves very often, when we are younger. LEAP is not just a project but it also a part of UoM Leos vision in bringing the leaders forward since their school life.

LEAP phase 2 was held on 20th and 21st October at Ko/Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya, Madakubura. The school was located in the valley of two beautiful mountains, and there the amazing environment and the everlasting cool climate gave UoM Leos an additional inspirational feeling before starting the LEAP.
Leadership improving activities were held throughout the two days with some fun events between them. But unfortunately, the campfire was not held due to the rain in the evening. Due to the bad weather, UoM Leos had to make a quick route for the hike in the morning and it brought the leadership and quick thinking of the Leos into the test. One of the best hikes was on show during the LEAP 2.
In the end, LEAP 2 brought an emotional ending for all the UoM Leos, who were there, because of the heartwarming feedbacks of the students.
“It’s always nice if the plans work well, but the real pleasure comes if we do things better, under unexpected circumstances”  Just a thing to remember for the Leos.
Nena Diyawara

Education gives people some knowledge about the world and it is up to them to use it, and change the world into something better in return. Leo Club of University of Moratuwa contributed for the betterment of the education of the schools all over the country, for many years. In this year also, we started the project “Nena Diyawara” to share knowledge with the students who are sitting for the G.C.E O/L Examination in this year.

Project was initiated in the last month, and we conducted its’ another phase in this month too. It was successfully held on 13 th October atHikkaduwa Thiranagama Bodhiraja Maha Vidyalaya. This was not just an O/L seminar, but also an attitude developing program. Each phase of this seminar series started with a motivational program, to encourage the students for their studies and go after their goals.

The main objective in this project is to share the mathematical knowledge with the students for their coming O/L examination. Therefore, during the seminar we discussed a model paper with them and taught them some tricks and tips to learn the subject easily. As in each phase, in this time also we got good comments from the students after the program. At the same time, we would like to be thankful to everyone who helped us to make this project a success.

Health Camp

"ආරෝග්‍යා පරමා ලාභා" as this famous phrase, healthiness is the best thing ever we can obtain in our lifetime. Everybody hope to live a healthy life forever. But unfortunately, most of the people suffer from various diseases due to the lack of knowledge and sometimes due to lack of money. We all have the social responsibility on both these cases.

As we are gathered through Leo club of University of Moratuwa to serve the society, we could keep a step prior than others do and help those who needed it the most. With this glimpse of hope, we organized a health camp for those who has economic problems, to checkup their illnesses and give them medical advices and consults.

The project was held as a joint project with the Lions Club of Gaalupura Central in Baddegama on 7 th October. The project was successfully ended with the participation of many Leo members and as well as prospects of Leo Club of University of Moratuwa. More than hundred of people got assisted from the camp and we also got good comments from those who attended on that day.
Wings for Dreams

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” -Helen Keller-
Actually they aren't different from us. Difference comes from the way in which we look at them. They don't need our sympathy. They just need our love, affection and most importantly, our support. They are the stars on the earth.
With the mere ambition of bringing the happiness to them, Project "Wings for Dreams" was held on 4th of October, 2018 at Meth Mihira Children's Centre, Moratuwa as a joint project, in association with Leo Club of Werahara, Leo Club of Raththanapitiya, Leo Club of Raigampurawaraya, Leo Club of Piliyandala Central College & Leo Club of Milleniya. There, during the day, many joyful activities were carried out with the help of all Leos and Prospects participated in the event.

An art competition was done for their happiness and also a special magic show was presented for their enjoyment. It was their first magic show experience and they really enjoyed it and loved it. There was a talent show too, which presented their special talents for the gathering. At the end of the day, all of them were given a present as a memorial. Most importantly, this day became an unforgettable memory not only for the children, but also for every participant. It was an emotional day for all of us.

We all got something to enjoy, but still we are moaning about the things that we aren’t able to get. But, just think, there are still a lot of people who can’t even talk or work pr
operly. So, just enjoy what you have got, because it is the best gift we all have received.

“Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” Not all the people in the world get a chance to feel the same amount of love and affection from their parents. But those who don’t get that also have to be treated as same as others because, they do have the same leadership qualities.

Different kind of leadership activities were done throughout the day with the help of the UOM Leos. Activities were mainly focused on improving communication skills, social skills, self-awareness and positive mindset which are the main qualities of a good leader.

Another successful day came to an end in the UOM Leos Diary with a successful project for the children who needs us the most with the participation of UOM Leos and prospects. Happiness and the cheerfulness in their faces told us what they have gained and our voyage of making leaders out of the ordinaries continues.
HARITHA SISILA

“Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, and you haven't done a thing. You are just talking." The world is dying without water and people still cut those trees which are the main source in the water cycle and wipeout forests from the land. The world is becoming a concrete forest quicker than man evolution.

We just have to find solutions to this and as UOM Leos we took our first step in making a greener world by planting trees. Project Haritha Sisila was held on 16th September at Sri Sobhitha Vidyalaya, Watareka, Galle as the first but not the last in our mission.

The project was done in association with the Central Environmental Authority. Galle District Girl Guides also participated in this project other than UOM Leos and 30 trees were planted throughout the school area. The project was done in parallel to the National Tree Planting Day and our belief is that it should not just be limited to a day. So we are encouraging all of you, just try to plant at least one tree.

“Trees exhale for us so that we can inhale them to stay alive. Can we ever forget that? Let us love trees with every breath we take until we perish.” Just take a moment and think about it.
