Diacare

Project “Diacare” themed "One Choice at a Time for a Diabetes-Free Life" was launched by Leo Club of University of Moratuwa in recognition of World Diabetes Month uniting our efforts with the global call for diabetes awareness. Almost one in four Sri Lankan adults (23%) has diabetes and another one in three (31%) has high blood sugar levels according to recent data and the key for prevention is increased awareness and testing.

Inorder to raise awareness, the project consisted of an awareness campaign conducted via all social media networks for 7 consecutive days. The flyers series included posters titled “Healthier plate”, “Exercise”, “Foot care tips for diabetes”, “Catch it early”, “Know your BMI” and “Understanding the glycemic index” covering 7 key concepts in diabetes prevention and management.

A free testing programme and an awareness session for the general public was conducted by medical professionals on 29th November 2024 at Municipal Clinic - Moratuwa. The project received rewarding responses from both the public and the medical professionals. We sincerely thank everyone who joined hands with us in making “Diacare” a success!

Active Reach

Project “Active Reach” themed “paving the way for brighter futures - one game at a time!” was another inspiring initiative by Leo Club of University of Moratuwa where we donated essential sports equipment to a needy school. The project was focused on empowering budding sports stars as the donations included sports equipment necessary for primary section students.

“Active Reach” was chaired by Thishani Nawoda with the assistance of Praneeth Deshan and Bhashini Wijesundara who were the secretary and treasurer of the project respectively. The project was guided throughout by the Director of Sports Leo Abheeshu Kasthuriarachchi. The funds and donations for the project were collected with the help of generous donors.

The project was successfully carried out on 29th October 2024 from 11.00 am onwards at WP/Piliyandala Bodhiraja Vidyalaya. The Principal and the school staff praised UoM Leos for their efforts and it was truly wholesome to witness the delight and enthusiasm of the little students.

We were able to create a lasting impact and inspire the next generation of champions through “Active Reach”

Dream Forest

Dream Forest is a tree-planting campaign aimed at building a greener planet. Leo Club of University of Moratuwa organized this event in collaboration with Lions Club of Negambo Horizon. We conducted 2 campaigns on the 2nd of November at Pansalathanna Forest Reserve and on the 3rd of November at Rambukoluwa Forest Reserve. The main goal of the campaign was to plant 500 endangered trees. The project was graced by Professor Sarath Kotagama, a respected environmentalist as our chief guest and his inspiring words motivated all of us to work even harder for this cause.

Volunteers from various backgrounds came together to make this effort a success showing the power of teamwork in protecting the environment. Over two days, our team of 12 Leos, 2 Lions, 15 prospects and 5 volunteers planted 500 plants. None of this would have been possible without the amazing support of DP Tree Book who was the technical supporter and the Planet Protectors Organization who generously donated the plants and tools.

The Department of Forest Conservation helped to plan this project and they guided us on selecting trees and the best planting methods. Transporting everything to these remote areas and unexpected weather were big challenges. But thanks to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved we overcame them. On the first day, we prepared the sites and on the next day, we got to work planting. Each tree was planted ensuring it would grow strong.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Title Partner Planet Protectors Organization and our Technical Partner DP Tree Book for their invaluable support in making this initiative a success. Together, we’ve taken a significant step toward a greener future.
