When you hear the word "Dengue" definitely you may get shake. It has become so much harsh to our lives. Statistics released by the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry reported 24,829 cases of dengue island wide as of today. Among them were 177 deaths. Colombo district suffered the most with 4,057 cases followed by Gampaha district with 2,920 cases and Jaffna district with 2,535 cases. Ratnapura, Batticaloa, Kandy, and Kurunegala districts also recorded high rates of the epidemic. Also considering the world it has become a big trouble. Following figure depicts how dengue is spread.

Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes Symptoms appear 3—14 days after the infective bite. Dengue fever is a febrile illness that affects infants, young children and adults. mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses.

Symptoms range from a mild fever, to incapacitating high fever, with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash. There are no specific antiviral medicines for dengue. It is important to maintain hydration. Use of acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. aspirin) and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Ibuprofen) is not recommended.

First project under new wings..............

The first project by newly installed office bearers was held on 31st of july 2010 Leos of University of Moratuwa have decided to take steps to aware society considering the dengue phobia spreading all over the country.The project was named as "Dengue awareness program and sharamadana campaign". The elders was mainly focused by this project considering their lack of knowledge and disability of escaping from mosquito bites . There were some discussions on selecting the place. Finally program was conducted in "Janadara samithiye wadihiti niwasaya, Idama, Moratuwa" where lives the highest number of elders in western province, about 160.

On 28th of July pre visited the elders’ home for a feasibility survey by Leo Sanjeewa and Leo Nuwan Identified the critical points in that home where dengue mosquitoes can be born. After chatting with some elders, decided to prepare a leaflet to distribute within them by considering their lack of knowledge about dengue.
Leo Sanjeewa and Leo Nuwan listed the equipments needed for the Shramadana by day after day of pre visit and informed Leo Kasun who was responsible for collecting equipments. It was much big deal for Leo Kasun as the list contains ladders, knives, mamotee and rakes. There were some issues of collecting those from the university as the day was a holiday. However Mora Leos could overcome from those barriers by renting those equipments.

We arrive the place about 8.30 am. A crew of 25 people was contributed for the project. In the first 4 hours we spent our time with cleaning elders’ home where dengue mosquitoes can be born. After elders have their lunch we were moved to aware them about dengue mosquitoes. We went ward by ward and distributed the leaflet that was designed by Leo Sahan.

We could finish our awareness program and Shramadana campaign by 2.00 pm. Mr Jayantha Gunarathna who is the officer in charge for elders home delivered a nice speech appreciating our work.

The new chapter has started............

The textile auditorium of University of Moratuwa was illuminated on 24th of July 2010 with the 8th installation ceremony of Leo Club of University of Moratuwa.

The chief guest and the guest of honor of the occasion were District President(Elect) Leo Thilini Jayaweera and Lion Sathasivam Ramachandran MJF respectively. The installation was got more colorful by the year-gone-by and "Mada" presentations. Past president Leo Sameera Hewage admired the great support from leos of his club, leos from other clubs, lions and distributed tokens of appreciation.
